DMS Video was founded
From humble beginnings to the industry leader, DMS Video is a highly sought-after Event Videography company located just North of Toronto.
Darren Sager, owner and founder of 5Gear Studios and DMS Video, started everything in the basement of his parents' house. Working tirelessly, Sager began to receive word-of-mouth praise from his happy customers, and the company quickly outgrew his small space.
Because of its growing success, DMS Video had to hire several freelance videographers to keep up with the solid work-flow. They did so in a new office in Thornhill.
1990 also marked the transition from consumer to industrial-level equipment. Staying abreast of technological advances has kept Darren at the forefront of video production.
Consistent growth merited full-time employees, which lead to a larger office the following year.
During these years, DMS Video did steady work for various corporations, producing commercials, product videos, and promotional pieces. It wasn't until 2008 that the name 5Gear Studios came to be, however it existed informally since inception.
In 1995 a representative of Steven Spielberg contacted Darren, asking whether he would be interested in work. A documentary on Holocaust survivors was on the table, and they needed someone who could interview and film Canadian survivors. This prompted Darren to invest in professional-level broadcast cameras, and upgrade his lighting.
For several years Darren collected stories and footage for Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. Hearing the stories of the survivors first-hand changed Darren's life forever.
In two short years they outgrew their office once again, and they moved to a new space. As always, DMS Video lead the pack as far as equipment and expertise were concerned. Corporate video production was steady in growth, and even more people were brought on as full-time staff to keep up with the demand.
Customized from the ground-up, this new home for all of the video staff is pure perfection. Nine complete editing suites, two meeting rooms, complete equipment room, attached garage for our fleet, reception desk, coffee station, full kitchen... it's magical!
After over twenty years of creating corporate videos under the DMS name, the creative team decided to brand a separate company for video production. 5Gear Studios took off with a running start, and it hasn't slowed since!
Shortly after this, 5Gear Studios invested in cinema-style cameras and pro-line lenses, providing a higher quality that was previously not possible. It was a game changer, that's for sure!
Always ahead of the curve, 5Gear Studios was among the first to have a licenced Drone pilot for aerial cinematography. They also have trained Steadicam operators, a 16-foot jib, a MOVI, pro-line sliders, teleprompters, complete Diva, Lowel and Arri lighting systems, professional-level mono and tripods, Sennheiser audio systems and voice-over booth, audio field recorders, a Ninja... and the list updates on a weekly basis.
In studio there are graphic artists, 2D and 3D animators, sound mixers, Blu-ray authors, and editors. 5Gear Studios does complete film production in-house through collaborative minds. That means that there is a shorter turn around for produced videos because everyone works together. It's better this way.
Whereas the earlier offices were for production, equipment, and staff only, the new office needed extra space for visiting clients, corporate meetings, and walk-in traffic. It also meant that the company needed a receptionist to man the front so that the staff could keep up with editing. At this point there were four full-time videographers and editors in studio, and an arsenal of freelance videographers on speed dial.
The first step to creating a strong video is flushing out the concept.
Where is it being shown?
Who is your target audience?
Is there a message that you would like to
leave in the viewer's mind?
Are there examples of other videos that you
would like to emulate?
Do you want a script, or should it be free
and natural dialogue?
Will 2D/3D animation strengthen delivery?
These are the types of questions that we ask when we work alongside you, and through brainstorming and collaboration, we can give you the video of your dreams.
Once you have your idea, we can get started on the pre-production.
Script finalization, shot lists, storyboards, production schedules, location scouting, talent coordination, hair, makeup, craft services, permits, release forms...
it can be very overwhelming to some, but we love it! We'll calmly lead you through the full process, and show you how fun planning can be!
Without a doubt the most exciting part of the process!
Our experienced directors, cinematographers, gaffs, grips and sound mixers are used to the early morning production schedules, and their talents take away all of the stress and replace it with pure enjoyment and ease.
Unlike many studios where there is a disconnect between production and post-production, our editors are on-site during filming! They listen to the director's calls, observe the camera movements, and take note of the client's needs. There is never a broken-telephone kind of experience thanks to this, and the editing goes smoothly, and fully reflects the client's intentions.
Once your film is complete we can help you get the right file types and exports to circulate.
Movie theatre, television, internet, or home-viewing: we can always provide you with the right codecs, resolutions, bit rates, and protocols.
We also have graphic artists and BluRay authors in-studio, so we can help you promote and display your work in the best light possible for consumers.
Let us help you create the film of your dreams!
The only name you need
in complete film production.
You're now ready to meet the creative beasts
who work tirelessly to produce the
videos of your dreams.
